What types of Acai Are Available To Buy?

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

With all of the positive press regarding the acai berry, one would think that buying a basket full of fresh acai would merely be a matter of picking some up from the produce section of the local grocery store. However, the availability of fresh acai berries has been slow for most markets, except for those that live in the Amazon. Therefore, we wanted to find out why the acai was not an option in our local markets and to discuss some of the other options available for most of us to enjoy the health benefits of the acai.

The challenge involved in supplying distant markets with fresh acai berries is primarily a result of the composition of the acai. Up to half of the acai berry can be made up of fat. For this reason, the acai berry can begin to breakdown and degrade in about 24 hours after being picked from the tree. Clearly, this would not allow enough time for the fruit to be picked, packaged, and shipped to distant markets, such as the United States.

For this reason, the acai is generally packaged in a few different ways, which allow it to be shipped to distant markets. The first method is to extract the acai juice and put this into the form of a juice or energy drink. Additionally, the pulp of the acai berry, which is the only edible portion of the berry, can be made into a powder. this powder can be placed into a capsule for taking through the form of a daily pill. Lastly, another form of transporting the acai is gaining in popularity, which is having the berry frozen soon after harvesting. In several cases, the acai is frozen within 10 hours of being picked, which is well within the 24 hour time limit of when the fruit begins to spoil.

In summary, there are limitations to getting the acai berry to your local produce section. However, there are advances in getting the acai into the form of juice, powder, or frozen form that have made the transport of the acai much easier. So, you can expect to see more and more of the acai showing up at your local grocery store. However, it appears the acai will make its first appearance in the form of an addition to popular fruit juices on store shelves.

Antioxidants from the Acai Berry Help to Fight Premature Aging

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

There are a few common recommendations out there that have stood the test of time for good health. Among them is the importance of eating a balanced diet and regular exercise for maintaining good health. A good night’s rest is essential to allow the body to recover after a long day. These are all recommendations that have been around for ages and will remain as the cornerstones of good health.

As we allow the pressures of the day’s work, stress, and worries interfere with our sleeping habits, the body begins to experience a weakened immune system. The immune system is essential to maintain healthy living and is the body’s defense system against premature aging. One tool that blocks the premature aging process is the addition of antioxidants into the diet, such as those found in the acai berry.

The antioxidants in the acai berry in effect result in providing the body the ability to fight disease and premature aging. In addition to the acai berry, similar antioxidants are included in foods containing Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and selenium. These antioxidants capture free radicals in the body, which work to break down the immune system in the body. Free radicals enter the body in a variety of ways, including from unhealthy foods, smoking, and the environment.

A diet rich in the vitamins listed above, along with a supplement such as the acai berry, will result in the strengthening of the body’s immune system. There are several additional benefits to this diet as well. These include increased energy, which is sustained through the day, unlike the type of energy that is achieved from caffeine. In addition, users describe a general feeling of better health with a more positive outlook on life. Other benefits include an improved cardiovascular function, which will help to maintain organs such as your eyes and lungs.

In summary, the addition of antioxidants to the person’s diet will help to maintain a strong immune system. These antioxidants from the acai berry, along with a balanced diet, will help fight the effects of premature aging. These benefits can be achieved even when some of the building blocks of a healthy lifestyle cannot be obtained.  Today’s stressful lifestyle makes it difficult for many of us to maintain a healthy diet, regular exercise, and the appropriate amount of sleep. With the addition of antioxidants, such as those found in the acai berry will give the body the tools it needs to maintain a healthy body.

A Brief History of the Acai Berry

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

In the United States, the recognition of the health benefits of Acai date back to the 1950s of American history, in which doctors began to notice that the acai could be used as a tool to increase energy.  In the 1960s, the renowned Gracie jiu-jitsu family suggested consuming acai before and after physical exercise*. Recently, many new medical reports have determined even more exciting health benefits from acai.

The acai is generally grown thousands of miles away from Rio De Janeiro, but it was here in which the acai acquired a lot of publicity and a few real powerful endorsers. Beginning in the 1970s, northern Brazilians who moved to Rio still had roots in the Amazon. The Amazon is where the acai had been regularly ingested as a natural source of energy. The people of the Amazon are known for living a healthy lifestyle. One of the characteristics that held the acai from being shipped was the fact that it needed to be frozen for transport. However, as the technology to freeze and transport the acai grew, so did the use of the acai by several athletes.

The history of the acai has its roots in the customs of the native people of the Amazon. the acai has been around and applied for it’s many functions for centuries. The acai has been used for food, energy, and to treat numerous medical conditions. Although the acai did not make it to the western world for quite some time, due largely in part to the transportation initiations, it has been used for its healing attributes in the Amazon for quite sometime. In particular, the acai had been used to strengthen the body’s immunity, fight infections, and to provide energy. Today, the acai is believed to be beneficial to the heart, reduce the risk of prostate cancer, and various other medical conditions. Today, the acai is used on a daily basis from those looking to the acai as a daily supplement.

Clearly, the acai has a long history and it appears this berry will be with us for a long, long time!
